- [S832] What are the Hunter Lists ?. In 1709 thousands of German speaking farmers and artisan left their homes in what is now south west Germany and trawled to London, England. They were motivated by poverty, war, and a desire for free land in British North America. In 1710 around 3,000 of these poor Palatines, as the English called them, were sent to the colony of New York. In exchange for their passage and support they were to work on a project producing naval stores.
New York governor Robert Hunter was in charge of the Palatines and the naval store project. To feed and clothe the Palatines Hunter was authorized to spend 6 pence per day for individuals 10 years or older and 4 pence per day for individuals less than 10 years old. He kept accounting records to document how much money he spent feeding and clothing the Palatines. These are the Hunter Lists. They are organized by head of family and number of individuals in each age group. The exact amount actually allocated to each family group is also recorded. When this amount is less than the full amount for the period it can indicate a family member has left the group.
